Wool Roving

Wool roving is combed or carded fiber, ready to spin or felt. Choose 22 micron Merino for soft, next-to-skin yarn. Corriedale, at 26 to 28 micron, spins a durable everyday yarn and suits both wet and needle felting. Kromski Polish Merino tops come in dozens of solid colors. Undyed tops are ready for your own dye pot, and variety packs let you sample colors before buying by the pound.

Find Wool Roving for Spinning, Felting and Blending

Wool roving here means prepared fiber, not the thick single-ply finished yarn sometimes called roving yarn. It is a starting material for drafting yarn, building a felted form, or combining colors by hand. Begin with the preparation and the project. Combed top has parallel fibers for a smoother drafting experience, while carded sliver has a more open structure that can suit airy yarn or textural felting.

Choose fiber before color

  • Select breed and preparation for the handle and finished fabric you want.
  • Use natural shades when you want to dye, blend or work with undyed color.
  • Choose dyed fibers when the project calls for color transitions, contrast or a ready-made palette.

The assortment includes Merino, Corriedale, Polish Merino, Polwarth, Rambouillet and Targhee preparations, plus carded Corriedale sliver and blended fibers such as Merino with bamboo or silk. That gives a spinner a useful choice between aligned combed top, carded fiber and color blends before any twist is added.

For ready-to-use color, browse dyed wool roving. Makers building their own palette can compare undyed wool roving tops.
