Choose Cone Yarn for Weaving

Cone yarn is a useful format when a weaving project calls for continuous yardage and a consistent yarn source across the warp or weft. Start with the fabric you want to make, then compare fiber, weight, yarn construction and the amount of yarn needed. A sample at the intended sett is the best way to check proportion, coverage and handle before winding a full warp.

Set up a thoughtful yarn plan

  • Choose warp and weft yarns for the role each will play in the cloth.
  • Estimate yardage from project dimensions and sampling needs.
  • Test the yarn with the reed and sett you plan to use.

The selection includes Bockens cotton warp seine twine and Nialin cottolin, Brown Sheep Wool Warp, Ito and Revolution Fibers options, Euroflax linen and LoftyFiber cone yarns. Some are named for warp use, while others are cone-wound yarns that still need to be evaluated for the proposed role. Warp needs enough strength for the tension and reed abrasion in a particular setup; sett determines the spacing. Test both in a sample rather than assuming a cone format makes any yarn a universal warp.
