The Schacht Standard Floor Loom is a high castle jack loom for weavers who want a sturdy, long-term studio loom with smooth mechanics, reliable tension control, and room to grow. Available in 36" and 45" weaving widths, with either 4 Now-4 Later or 8-shaft configurations, this loom gives serious hobbyists, experienced weavers, teachers, and studio makers a dependable foundation for multi-shaft weaving.

Choose the 36" model if you want generous weaving width while keeping your loom footprint and shuttle reach more manageable. Choose the 45" model if you want more room for blankets, larger table linens, wider rugs, and custom yardage. Choose 4 Now-4 Later if you want to begin with four shafts and add four more later, or choose 8 Shaft if you are ready for the full patterning range from the start.

A Sturdy High Castle Loom for Serious Studio Weaving

The Schacht Standard Floor Loom is built from solid hard maple with a Danish oil finish, giving it the grounded feel many weavers want in a dedicated studio loom. Its high castle includes a built-in storage tray for small tools, shuttles, bobbins, notes, and project essentials, plus holes in the castle uprights for an extension lamp.

This is a stationary floor loom rather than a portable workshop loom. The back beam folds inward to reduce depth when needed, but the loom itself is heavy and designed for studio use. That weight and structure are part of what make it useful for wide warps, longer projects, firm beating, and multi-shaft weaving.

Choose Your Weaving Width

  • 36" weaving width: A strong choice for scarves, towels, runners, baby blankets, fabric panels, narrower rugs, and many general weaving projects. This size offers generous project range while keeping the overall width and reach more manageable.
  • 45" weaving width: Best for weavers who want more room for wide blankets, table linens, larger rugs, broad fabric panels, and yardage. This size offers more weaving space, but it also requires more room in your studio and a longer shuttle reach across the warp.

Both sizes function the same way. The right choice depends on the projects you want to weave, the space you have available, and how comfortable you are reaching across a wider warp.

Choose Your Shaft Configuration

  • 4 Now-4 Later: This option is built on an 8-shaft loom frame and ships with 4 shafts installed. It leaves space to add 4 additional shafts later with the correct 4 Later kit. It is a thoughtful choice if you want to begin with four-shaft weaving while keeping a clear growth path.
  • 8 Shaft: This option ships with all 8 shafts installed, giving you more patterning flexibility from the beginning. It is the best fit if you already enjoy multi-shaft drafts or want more room for twills, double weave, block structures, and complex weave structures.

The 4 Now-4 Later model ships with the heddles, treadles, tie-ups, and other items normally included with the 8-shaft model. When you are ready to add the remaining shafts, the 4 Later kit supplies the shaft frames and jack and lamm assemblies needed for the expansion.

Key Features and Why They Matter

  • High castle design gives you a built-in storage tray and lamp holes, helping keep your weaving tools organized and your work area better lit.
  • Underslung jack mechanism raises the shafts from the center point, supporting a clean shed and responsive weaving action.
  • Parallel lamm system supports light treadling and removes the need to adjust tie-up cord lengths.
  • Pre-measured nylon tie-up cords slide into the treadle slots, helping make tie-up changes more direct between drafts.
  • Friction-reducing aluminum shaft channels help the shafts move smoothly during weaving.
  • Friction brake on the warp beam and ratchet-and-dog system on the cloth beam help you manage warp tension and cloth advance with control.
  • Folding back beam reduces the loom depth from 38" open to 26" folded, which helps save space between weaving sessions.
  • Removable breast beam and back beam make the loom easier to dress and thread, especially for wide warps, fine yarns, and denser setts.
  • Adjustable open-sided beater helps with reed placement and supports consistent beating across a range of weaving projects.
  • Solid hard maple construction gives the loom a stable studio presence for multi-shaft weaving, firm beating, and longer-term use.

Best For

  • Multi-shaft weaving
  • Scarves, shawls, runners, towels, and table linens
  • Blankets, wide fabric panels, and yardage
  • Rugs and firm-beat projects when yarn, sett, and warp structure are appropriate
  • Pattern drafting, twills, double weave, and more advanced structures
  • Weavers moving from rigid heddle, table loom, or smaller floor loom setups into a larger studio loom
  • Teaching studios, home studios, and production-minded hobby weaving

Reed Selection

This loom includes one stainless steel reed. Reed dent options include 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, and 20 dent. If you are unsure which reed to choose, a 10 dent reed is a useful general-purpose starting point for many weavers, while finer or heavier yarns may call for a different reed.

After checkout, we will be in touch to help confirm that you ordered the correct configuration and reed dent for your weaving plans.

What to Know Before You Buy

  • This is a large, heavy studio loom. It is not designed for frequent transport to workshops or classes.
  • The back beam folds to reduce depth, but you will still need enough space to sit, weave, dress the loom, and move around the frame.
  • The 36" model is easier to fit into many home studios, while the 45" model gives more weaving width for larger textiles.
  • The 4 Now-4 Later option is a good fit if you want to begin with four shafts and add the remaining four later.
  • The 8-shaft option is best if you already know you want more patterning capacity from the beginning.
  • Rug weaving, dense setts, and wide warps should always be planned with the right yarn, reed, warp structure, and sampling.
  • Optional accessories such as a bench, raddle, warping board, warping mill, extra shuttles, bobbin winder, and warp sticks are sold separately.
