This is a wonderfully fun sock pattern to knit up. “Mahalle” (ma-ha-lay) means “neighborhood” in Turkish. This is a Top Down version of the traditional Toe Up sock which has been knit in Turkish families for generations.
The sock starts in the round with a 2x2 rib cuff. The leg is then worked to the heel flap, which is worked flat with decreased vertical sides, so it snuggly fits around the wearer’s heel. The foot is then worked again in the round to the flat toe box decreases, and the tip of the toe is grafted together using Kitchener Stitch and working yarn.
The Mahalle Sock Pattern by Urth Yarns is designed to highlight the unique characteristics of Uneek Fingering Yarn, knit using 1 skein in the stockinette stitch.
This hand-dyed, machine washable, extrafine merino yarn does all of the hard work, making this an easy project.
And for an extra bonus, if you post a photo of your project and tag us and Urth Yarns on social media (@revolutionfibers & @urthyarns) then Urth Yarns plants a tree for every completed project. So let's save our heads from the elements while we assist in saving the world!
