The Louët Jane is a foldable multi-shaft table loom for weavers who want substantial weaving capability without dedicating permanent floor space to a large loom. Use it on a sturdy table or pair it with the optional Jane floor stand for a dedicated freestanding setup.

Choose from 50 cm, 70 cm, or 90 cm weaving widths and either an 8-shaft model expandable to 16 shafts or a complete 16-shaft model. Jane folds with your warp still in place, making it especially useful when studio space, storage, or portability matter.

Compare Louët Jane Models

The right Jane depends on three main things: how wide you want to weave, how many shafts you want available, and how much space you have for the loom. The 16-shaft models are deeper than their 8-shaft counterparts, so both width and shaft configuration matter when planning your setup.

Folded storage sizes above combine Louët's published loom footprint with its published folded height of approximately 21 cm (8¼"). Handles, cranks, and other hardware may extend slightly beyond these measurements.

50, 70, or 90 cm?

• Jane 50 is the most compact current size and the easiest choice for workshops, classes, smaller studios, and regular transport. It includes an integrated carrying handle.
• Jane 70 gives you noticeably more weaving width while keeping a more moderate footprint than the Jane 90.
• Jane 90 provides the widest weaving area for broader cloth and larger projects. It also requires the most workspace and more assembly when first setting up the loom.

8 Shafts or 16 Shafts?

The expandable 8-shaft Jane gives you eight shafts now with the option to add the compatible shaft-extension set later. It is a practical choice when eight shafts cover your current weaving plans but you want to preserve a path to sixteen.

The 16-shaft Jane gives you the full shaft capacity from the beginning and includes a shuttle race as standard equipment. The additional shafts provide substantially more threading possibilities for complex multi-shaft structures.

The current 8-shaft Jane models are specifically designed to expand to 16 shafts. Older non-expandable Jane 8 looms use a different design and should not be assumed compatible with the current extension system.

Folds With Your Warp in Place

One of Jane's most useful features is its ability to fold while fully dressed. You can leave an active warp on the loom, fold Jane down, and reclaim your workspace between weaving sessions.

The current Jane folds to approximately 21 cm (8¼") high. The Jane 50 also includes an integrated carrying handle and protective feet that allow the folded loom to rest safely while stored or moved.

The 16-shaft Jane also includes a shuttle race. A shuttle race is available separately for the expandable 8-shaft Jane.

The standard loom includes a 40/10 reed. The included reed cannot be exchanged for another dent as part of the standard loom configuration. For other yarn sizes and setts, Louët stainless steel reeds are available separately in widths that match the current Jane models.

Compatible Louët Jane Accessories

Jane's accessory system lets you adapt the loom for a freestanding setup, longer or more complex warps, different setts, and easier transportation.

Assembly and Setup

The Jane 50 and Jane 70 arrive partially assembled, so much of the main loom structure is already in place. Final assembly is completed using the supplied hardware and instructions.

The Jane 90 requires more assembly because of its larger size. Louët's current assembly instructions also call for a rubber mallet, sharp scissors, and a ruler; these tools are not included.

Care and Long-Term Use

Jane requires little routine maintenance. Louët recommends checking and tightening the loom's screws after the first few months of use and periodically afterward, especially in dry environments where natural wood movement can affect hardware.

With years of use, shaft cords or elastic return components may eventually need replacement depending on climate and frequency of weaving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fold the Jane with a project still on the loom?

Yes. Jane folds with the warp in place, so you do not need to remove an active project simply to store the loom between weaving sessions.

Can the 8-shaft Jane be expanded to 16 shafts later?

Yes. The current expandable Jane 8 models can be converted to 16 shafts with the compatible Louët extension set. Older non-expandable Jane models use a different design.

Does the Jane floor stand turn it into a treadle loom?

No. Jane remains a manually controlled table loom. Shafts are selected with the loom's hand toggles whether Jane is used on a table or on the floor stand.

Is a shuttle race included?

The shuttle race is included with the 16-shaft Jane. It is an optional accessory for the expandable 8-shaft Jane.

What does a shuttle race do?

A shuttle race provides a supported surface at the bottom of the shed for a boat shuttle to travel across. It can be particularly useful on wider warps.

Why would I add a second warp beam?

A second warp beam allows separate groups of warp threads to be tensioned independently. This can be useful when combining yarns with different stretch or texture, working with supplementary warps, or weaving structures that require different warp tensions.

Which Jane is easiest to transport?

The Jane 50 is the most portable current size. It has the smallest overall width, includes an integrated carrying handle, and has a padded carrying bag available separately.

Which Jane gives me the most weaving width?

The Jane 90 provides 90 cm / 35⅜" of weaving width. It also has the largest overall footprint, so check both its open and approximate folded storage dimensions when planning your space.

Do I need the floor stand?

No. Jane can be used on a sturdy table. The optional floor stand is useful when you want a dedicated freestanding setup without using table space.

Can I use different reed dents?

Yes. Compatible Louët stainless steel reeds are available in multiple dent sizes. Match the reed width to your Jane and select the dent spacing appropriate for your yarn, sett, and intended fabric.

Can I add more heddles?

Yes. Jane uses 205 mm Texsolv heddles, and additional heddles can be added when your threading requires more heddles on particular shafts.
